“This Louisiana Thing That Drives Me:” is a new coffee table book published by the UL Press that examines author Ernest J. Gaines unique connection to the state of Louisiana. The book couples photographic images of Gaines and the places that have inspired him with quotations from interviews and his writing. It is divided into three parts: Land, Literature, and Legacy.
The Gaines book will actually be released in conjunction with the Louisiana Book Festival, which is Saturday, October 17 in Baton Rouge on the grounds of the State Capitol. The book is one of seven titles published by the UL Press that will be featured at this year’s festival.
Author Marcia Gaudet says “The UL Press and UL scholars will be major players in the 2009 Louisiana Book Festival. It is a wonderful statewide showcasing of work being done here at the university. For example, having the book talk ‘Ernest J. Gaines: Still Driven by That ‘Louisiana Thing’ scheduled in the Senate Chamber is a mark of distinction at the festival.”
A second book the UL Press is premiering at the festival is Lorraine Gendron: Louisiana Folk Artist, which is the first extensive treatment of the Hahnville, Louisiana-based artist, whose Mississippi River mud sculptures, painted wood cutouts, acrylic on wood paintings and primitive dolls are treasured by collectors from around the world. Gendron is the featured artist of this year’s Louisiana Book Festival and one of her paintings was used for the 2009 commemorative poster and other promotional materials.
The other UL Press books featured at this year’s Louisiana Book Festival are:
Bienville’s Dilemma: A Historical Geography of New Orleans, by Richard Campanella
Old South Baton Rouge: The Roots of Hope, by Petra Munro Hendry, and Jay Edwards
