Local officials have unveiled Lafayette’s 2012 Louisiana Bicentennial Celebration of Statehood Calendar. The Arts and Culture Collaboration Group, composed of more than 20 local organizations, has developed a calendar of events to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Louisiana statehood.
Events include concerts, exhibits, plays, festivals, and much more – with more than eighty events, there is an activity for everyone. The Collaboration Group, formed by City-Parish President Joey Durel, met for the past six months to plan the Bicentennial celebration. The Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission (LCVC) partnered with Lafayette Consolidated Government to publish the calendar.
Individuals who wish to pick up a calendar can do so at Lafayette City Hall, LCVC, or online at Lafayette2012.com.
Lafayette will kick off the 2012 Louisiana Bicentennial celebration the weekend of October 14-16, 2011 during Festivals Acadians et Créoles at Girard Park. Louisiana Bicentennial Commission Chairman General Russel Honoré and Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne will attend the festival on Saturday to kick off the festivities.
“Today is a great day for Lafayette. Our government and our community’s arts and cultural organizations are showing what is possible by working together. Our new collaboration has produced the first of many outstanding results, and I commend all the participants for making sure that Lafayette has one of the best Bicentennial celebrations in the state,” said City-Parish President Joey Durel.
Additional information about other events happening around the state can be found at the Louisiana Bicentennial Commission website.
