The Ragin’ Cajun golf team bounced back from a tough first round to take the overall lead after the first day of the Kansas Invitational at the Alvanar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kansas on Monday.

“I am extremely proud of the way the team bounced back from a slow start in the first round to take the lead,” head golf coach Theo Sliman said. “I put the blame on myself for not having the guys ready to start the morning, but at the same time it shows the determination of this team to be able to turn things around the way they did.”

UL fell 10 strokes behind Cal State Fullerton after posting a score of 297 through the first 18 holes. The Cajuns then managed the lowest team round of the day shooting four-under par (284) in the second round led by sophomore Chris Weninger to go in front.

Weninger is one of three Cajuns in the top-10 after carding 72-69 (-3) to sit in a tie for second place overall, just one shot off of the leader.

“Chris had an exceptional day, and I can’t be more pleased with the way he came out and performed.” Sliman added.

Andrew Noto and Philipp Fendt also are in the top-10 after 36 holes. Noto shot 75-70 (+1) and is in a tie for seventh, while Fendt also posted a sub-par score in the second round as he sits in a tie for ninth overall at two-over par (146).

Brandt Garon recorded a 36-hole score of 149 (+5) to finish the day in a tie for 22nd overall. Yohann Vora closed out the scoring for UL in a tie for 32nd (151).

“Tomorrow will be a great opportunity for the team to see if we can finish strong and maintain our lead.” Sliman added. “We expect to be in this position many times throughout the season, and hopefully we can pull out a win in only our second event of the year.”

Missouri State (584), Cal State Fullerton (584), Kansas (588) and UMKC (590) round out the top-5, while South Dakota State’s David Smith sits atop the leaderboard at 4-under.

The Cajuns will tee off again on Tuesday morning in the final round of the tournament.
