Lafayette - The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball player Donna Bourgeois picked up her first accolade of the season as she was named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Bourgeois threw a pair of complete games against SEC opponent Ole Miss boasting a 0.82 ERA in 17.0 innings of work. The sophomore set a personal best with 13 strikeouts on Friday afternoon and then topped that with a career-high 14 strikeouts on Sunday. She finished the weekend with 27 strikeouts compared to just four walks.

The Lafayette native scattered eight hits in two games - all singles. Bourgeois tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout in the Cajuns season opener.

In game one, she faced the minimum. She surrendered a leadoff single in the first inning, but Vallie Gaspard threw out the runner as she tried to take second base on the play. Bourgeois then retired the next 20 batters in order. Bourgeois sat down the first eight batters of the second game she pitched to give her 28 consecutive batters retired.

Bourgeois held the Rebels scoreless for the first 16.0 innings she pitched and tossed a career-best 10.0 innings on Sunday afternoon.

The accolade is the third time in her brief career that she has earned Pitcher of the Week honors.

Bourgeois and the Cajuns will return to action on Friday night as they host the 23rd Annual Louisiana Classics Softball Tournament at Lamson Park. The Cajuns will take on Lipscomb at 5:30 p.m.
