Despite freezing temperatures and howling winds, Chris Weninger shot a career-low 67 in the second round of the UALR/First Tee Classic to finish as one of three Cajuns in the top-10 after the first day in Little Rock on Monday.  Along with his fellow countryman, Philipp Fendt, the two Austrians helped the Cajuns golf team finish in a tie for sixth place after the first 36 holes.

Southern Miss and Missouri lead all teams with a two-round score of 586, just six strokes ahead of UL. Louisville (588), UALR (589) and Central Arkansas (591) are ahead of the Cajuns in the standings.  Missouri's Jace Long tops the leaderboard with a score of 138 (-6).

"I'm really proud of Chris today," said UL head coach Theo Sliman. "As of late, he's been a spark for our team. I'm seeing a grown man with an attitude that he's playing amongst boys. He's in the elite company of golfers. To begin with this kind of success as a freshman excites me for sure."

Weninger and Fendt both struggled in the opening round after shooting 75 (+3). But Weninger's career-low 67 (-5) catapulted the freshman into third place at 142 (-2), four strokes shy of the leader.

Fendt also responded in the second round, firing off a two-under round of 75 to finish at 145 (+1) and tied for sixth place.

Joining the Austrian duo in the top-10 was Andrew Noto. Noto sits in a tie for tenth place, one stroke behind Fendt with a score of 146 (+2).

"I'm excited for Andrew and Philipp," said Sliman." To have one of their teammates step up and take some relief off their shoulders will pay dividends in the future."

"As a unit we have to get some consistency from all the guys," added Sliman. "We need more production from the guys in the back of the lineup for us to be competitive, especially moving forward towards the Sun Belt Championship."

The Cajuns will tee it up again tomorrow morning at Chenal CC at 8 a.m. CT, weather permitting.
