UL's Carolina Cruz-Neira and Carencro High's Kit Becnel collaborate on grant which will focus on high performance computing.

Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira, a professor and endowed chair in the William Hansen Hall Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was recently awarded a $25K grant from the Board of Regents in support of her high school summer internship program. She is partnering with Ms. Kit Becnel, director of Carencro High School’s Academy of Information Technologies (COIT), on this project.

Dr. Cruz-Neira will be hosting 10 students this summer. The internship program will target senior Dr. Cruz-Neira (left) and Ms Becnel level underrepresented minorities and introduce them to computational engineering and science applications during a five-week period this summer. Dr. Cruz-Neira and Ms Becnel believe the program will reach out to minority students and introduce these students to “hands-on” experience with applications and technologies which would not normally be available to them, stimulating their interest in pursuing a college degree in science or engineering.
