Open Source Group Tonight
AOSG will have its first meeting in the Acadiana Symphony Building, 412 Travis St. in the Oil Center.
A new user group, the Acadiana Open Source Group, is intent on creating a local community centered around open source technologies. AOSG is being coordinated by Matthew Turland, a resident of Duson and Lead Programmer for surgiSYS LLC. A graduate of the University of Louisiana Computer Science undergraduate program, Louisiana's first Zend™ Certified Engineer, and an active figure in the PHP community, Turland has been working in the IT industry since 2001.
"Lafayette hasn't had many user groups to speak of in recent years," Turland said, when asked about his reasons for helping to start AOS. "There was a Linux User Group a number of years ago that no longer exists. The Macromedia User Group has been around for a few years and a .NET User Group recently came on the scene toward the end of last year. I've worked with open source software for several years and wanted to see a group exist for it as well."
The group has several goals, one of which is to provide an outlet for open source enthusiasts and developers to meet, socialize, and share their experiences. To that end, members are invited to give technical presentations detailing their experiences in using, managing, and developing open source software.
"Part of what I'd like to see AOS do is encourage participation in open source projects," Turland commented. "I think it's an appropriate topic for the first meeting to discuss how a person, any person, can do just that."
The meeting will take place on Tuesday April 29 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. It will be held in the upstairs conference room of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra Conservatory of Music at 412 Travis Street in the Lafayette Oil Center. For more information, visit the AOS web site at http://acadianaos.org.
