Coaching as a Career Choice

Cajuns' Head Baseball Coach Tony Robichaux on his philosophy of coaching.

The coaching profession is a very unique profession. It has given me an opportunity to get players to believe in themselves and to reach for goals they did not believe were attainable. Watching young players develop and grow has been one of the great benefits of my job.

Coaching has many ups and downs, many fake friends when you are going good and only your true friends are there when you are going bad. There is a huge price you have to pay for success: countless hours away from your family and children. You must decide early on how far you are willing to go for success. Many coaches are not in it for the real reasons, which should be to prepare your athlete for life's personal and professional challenges, which are the "Real Games." The game of life, where there are no rematches or second chances.

The best advice that i can give you is, if you want to coach and make money at it, become the best at what you do, and then you will be paid. Do not try to get the money first, it doesn't work that way. If you want to be a great coach, then always remember this: never care to show your players how much you know, make sure they know how much you care. Also, your legacy as a coach will not be how many wins you have but your players that you leave behind. Can they function in life after having been handled by you?

My definition of a coach is not a fat lazy person with a whistle around his neck sitting on some bleachers, but someone who is a professional at what he does for a living. Remember you will work 75% of your life, do something that you want to be doing. Don't worry about how much it pays, become the best at what you choose to do and you will get paid for it.

I consider myself lucky to be able to come to the baseball field everyday instead of going to work. Millions of disgusted people dread getting up every morning because they are going to work! Do what your passion tells you to do.

Write the one page miracle, take a sheet of paper and write down your passion in life. Put it somewhere you can see it everyday, follow it, and you will become it.
