Blue Moon Lineup, 7/24-26

This Weekend, the Blue Moon Saloon has on-stage Wendy Colonna, Kara Grainger, Richard Revue, BEATINPATH, Kevin Sekhani, and Backbone Stew.

THURSDAY, JULY 24
Wendy Colonna
Kara Grainger
8PM

Wendy has been voted "Best New Artist, 2005" by Jody Denburg, program director at KGSR (Austin, TX) and was featured on WFUV (NYC) as a "must hear" on their New Years Day play list. Even preceding a national radio launch, Wendy is gaining support and airplay across the Southwest and Gulf Region, as well as markets as diverse as Florida, NYC and even the Virgin Islands! The extraordinary attention is all the more notable because Wendy is hard to categorize – rock but with soulful underpinnings, folk but with infectious melodies, a singer/songwriter but backed by a who's who of Austin's finest musicians and session players. As hard to pin down as Sunday morning bliss and as energizing as a Saturday night buzz – don’t try to label it, just indulge in it.

Happy Hour
1/2 price drinks | 5-7pm

FRIDAY, JULY 25
Richard Revue
BEATINPATH
8PM

From New Orleans, BEATINPATH is an instant fix. Engaging lyrics together with great hooks unmistakably place this band head and shoulders above many recent vacuous pop and yes, even recent vacuous pseudo-country acts as well. A live show with irresistible style – grunge without the garage, gospel without the church, pop without the past 10 years.

“One of the best Rock bands to come out of New Orleans.”
— Chris Rose, New Orleans, Times-Picayune, 07

Happy Hour
1/2 price drinks | 5-7pm

SATURDAY, JULY 26
Kevin Sekhani
Backbone Stew
8PM

Kevin Sekhani may not be a household name, but his voice is well known to listeners in the music capital of Austin, Texas. A native of Lafayette, LA, Kevin has been active on the Texas scene for the past decade as the voice of Radio Thieves' rootsy pop, the glam-technostylings of Two Minute Sinatra and the baroque, power-pop of Parade.

Parade lives on as the 'Pet Sounds-side' of Kevin's personality, but with long-time musical partner, Ty Hurless, and Tim Veillon Kevin has started gigging and recording a solo album that owes much more to his Louisiana 'roots' musical heritage. Along with new band members, Jorge Castillo ,Robert Chacon and Michael Lamendola, a new sound has emerged that has been described as 'Van Morrison fronting the Old 97s or John Mellencamp's band'

Keep a watch for a new record and a new sound in 2008, and pass the word along that Kevin is still blazing new trails and crafting hooky and heartfelt tunes along the way.

A few years ago, a student stepped up to work towards making the UL "Horse Farm" a public park for the whole community. While a fierce argument raged through the community, fueled by divisive media commentary, the student heading the effort was meeting politely with President Authément, who welcomed both the student activism and the independence of thought and diversity of opinion, with the open-mindedness, tolerance, and collegiality that the life of the mind demands. She talks about her experiences with ultoday.com.

Currently in some circles there is this "new" idea, that education should serve workforce development. In this approach, the primary role of education is to produce workers for the economy-- in essence, employees. Not surprisingly, these arguments generally come from the business community.

Such an approach appears to be insufficient. First of all, if we are engaged in workforce development, then what workers are we developing? For which job shall we train workers? There is a popular slide show claiming that today's graduate will hold 10 to 14 jobs by age 38. What will those jobs be? And even if we knew what they would be, we couldn't possibly train for that many jobs. For which of them should we train our workers?
